Errol White
Trained at the Northern Contemporary Dance School, Errol White performed internationally with some of the UK’s best-known contemporary dance companies, such as Phoenix Dance Theatre, Scottish Dance Theatre, Random Dance Company and National Dance Company of Wales before setting up his own company White and Givan with partner, Davina Givan.
He has worked with distinguished directors and choreographers, including Rui Horta, Bill T Jones, Kenneth Kvarnstrom, Darshan Singh Buller, Fin Walker, Janet Smith and Ashley Page. Errol was Associate Artistic Director/Rehearsal Director of Scottish Dance Theatre, helping to take high quality dance to rural communities and to secure full time funding for the company.
Errol has also held the post of Artistic Director of National Youth Dance Wales from 2009 until 2013.
Errol is an award winning performer and choreographer: Dance Europe Magazine’s Critics Award for Best Male Performer; Marion North Mentoring Award for Choreography and the Lisa Ullman Travelling Scholarship Award.
With over 30 years of experience in the dance sector, Errol is in demand as a guest lecturer in dance colleges and various educational settings throughout the UK. Errol shares his legacy of practice, teaching the next generation of contemporary dancers through leading residencies and classes for professional dance artists and companies. At the forefront of dance development in Scotland, in 2014, in collaboration with Davina Givan, he launched Scotland’s first paid pilot apprenticeship programme, Evolve. In 2016 White & Givan were appointed Artists in Residence & Exchange Fellows at the University of Edinburgh and Associated Artists at the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh. In 2019 White & Givan were invited by Morag Deyes to lead the DEBS programme for Dance Base, Scotland’s National Dance Agency in Edinburgh.
His recent choreographic collaborations with Davina Givan include the successful and critically acclaimed works Three Works (2009), IAM (2012), Breathe (2014) & Worn (2018). White & Givan are also acclaimed Movement Directors/Choreographers.
In 2015 they were invited to work with Orla O’Loughlin, Artistic Director and Joint CEO of the Traverse Theatre for the new play Swallow by Stef Smith. Swallow won the Scotsman Fringe First Award and the Scottish Arts Club Theatre Award-First Place when it premiered in the 2015 Fringe Festival at the Traverse. Following on from the success of the initial collaboration, he worked with the Traverse Theatre on their subsequent productions including Tracks of the Winter Bear, Milk, Grain the Blood (a co-production between Tron Theatre and the Traverse Theatre), Girl in the Machine by Stef Smith and Meet Me at Dawn (produced for Edinburgh International Festival) in 2017. Most recently, in 2022, White & Givan worked on The Scent of Roses, written & directed by Zinnie Harris, for the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh.
White & Givan have an ongoing relationship with Francesca Joy, Artistic Director of Imagine if Theatre Company in Leeds, as directors/choreographers. Starting in 2016 with You Forgot the Mince written by Francesca Joy - the play toured theatres and prisons across the north of England and received critical acclaim during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 - Jadek, and the film My Old Man.
White & Givan has had ongoing project support from Creative Scotland, most recently secured Creative Scotland Touring funding to tour their new production, Worn, throughout Scotland and Open Funding funding to begin developing two new production’s Grace & Hush.
In 2023, Errol was appointed as a Trustee for Phoenix Dance Theatre.
